I choose to taste the Mud House Pinot Gris wine in order to broaden my horizons and may be even dispel some myth’s about Pinot Grigio in its Italian form being nothing more than slurping wine.
I know that Alsace Pinot Gris wines can be packed full of flavour and should be taken very seriously, but I knew nothing of a Pinot Gris from New Zealand , the first thing that struck me about the wine was the fresh colour and amazing legs which clung to the side of the glass and would not let go.
The next thing I got from the wine was an immense oiliness and richness that would rival any Grand Cru Alsace Pinot Gris. After this you have a freshness that I can only describe as a kind of tropical palm flavour, the palm flavour cuts through the richness leaving it perfectly balanced in your mouth.
If you want to try something complex and different I urge you just to try it. Forget what you thought you knew about Pinot Grigio / Pinot Gris.
