Andrew Coghlan, MD of Barrels and Bottles was asked to judge the Eggleston Agricultural show last weekend in Barnard Castle.
The show which attracts over 4000 visitors showcases the best of produce from the Durham Dales and North Yorkshire Moors.
In the 5 categories there were plenty of entries for both dry and sweeter styles of wine with a final category of Liqueurs throwing in some interesting flavours at the end of the competition.
After an initial assessment Andrew began tasting Dry whites, followed by sweeter whites, dry reds, sweet reds and finally the liqueurs.
After 2 hours of judging the winners were rewarded with cash prizes and a special award for the most points won went to D&G; Robinson.
The top 3 prize winners were also given a copy of Andrew’s Wine book called a perfect balance, with recipes from Coghlans Cookery School and also wine ideas to complement from the Barrels and Bottles range of fine imported wines.
Andrew had been approached to judge the event after a series of special road show tastings in the area, with wine groups now established in Butterknowle, Woodland, Romaldkirk and even further afield at Whitburn, where barrels and bottles host regular wine tasting evenings and help people to get a little more out of tasting fine wines.
