Hope Estate Wines from Hunter Valley, Australia

Hope Estate The CrackerHope Estate was established in 1994 when Michael Hope gave up a successful pharmacy career to do something he loved – to make wine. From small beginnings of 30 acres of vines at Broke in the Hunter Valley, Michael planted vineyards on the famed red basalt soil at Fordwich. Taking a giant leap forward in 2000 Michael acquired the Kyneton based Virgin Hills wine business in Victoria and the Donnybrook vineyard in Western Australia. Then in 2006 Michael purchased the 4,000 tonne crush Rothbury Estate property, a flagship Hunter winery and this is the new home of Hope Estate. With a large outdoor concert arena and even the chance to skydive, Hope Estate is well and truly on the Hunter Valley wine trail map.

Hunter Valley, New South Wales: This premium quality wine region, and Australia’s oldest, accounts for only 1.5% of the total Australian crush, but is a favourite in the UK with 70% of its exports coming here. Broke- Fordwich, an official sub-region of the western Hunter Valley, has friable fertile soils. The Wollombi Brook, consistently warm summers and cool winters make for excellent growing conditions. Geographe, Western Australia: The Donnybrook area in south west Australia is cut off from the maritime influence of the Indian Ocean by the intervention of the Darling and Whicher ranges. The climate is continental with warm to hot daytime temperatures and considerable diurnal fluctuations, creating fruit with great flavour and balancing freshness. With warm sunny days and mild nights through summer, and winters that are consistently wet and cold, Michael describes Donnybrook as the perfect place to grow grapes. Macedon Ranges, Victoria: Established on 300 acres of rugged bush-land high in the Victorian Macedon ranges at Kyneton, the Glenhope vineyard has a perfect northerly aspect which captures as much sunshine as possible. Short summers and an early autumn forces the vines to work hard to ripen fruit, and the results are very typical of cool climate viticulture intensely flavoured varietals showing great length.

The incredible enthusiasm and attention to detail in both viticulture and winemaking has been recognised through the overwhelming show success for Hope Estate wines, which are now exported to over a dozen countries worldwide.
