The annual 31 Days of German Riesling starts Monday with wines from Freiherr von Schleinitz, Mosel taking centre stage all next week. Their entire range of Riesling wine from QbA to Auslese is available for tasting with a massive 25% discount off ALL German Riesling wines throughout July.
Quick facts about German Riesling:
1. With naturally high acidity, Rieslings are said to be amongst the best white wines in the world, and some have ageing potential similar to some of world’s best red wines from top regions such as Bordeaux and Burgundy.
2. Noble sweet Rieslings were first produced by accident – permission to start picking the grapes was given too late, their natural sugar content was already much higher than usual, and the results were Spätlese and Auslese wines. Now, that’s a success story!
3. Riesling’s birthday is on the 13th March – the oldest official mention goes back to 1435!
4. The word ‘Riesling’ has various possible origins – one of these is ‘Rusling’ which might refer to the grape variety’s dark wood, another one is ‘reissend’ which is thought to refer to its naturally high acidity.
