Corr blimey what a fantastic set of red wines we have just introduced. Five red wines from the
Kay Brothers Amery Vineyards located in the McLaren Vale, Australia.
There is a Merlot and a Cabernet Sauvignon to ease you into the three stunning Shiraz wines on offer. The Block 6 Shiraz is a veritable feast of tangy, fruit driven flavours and was awarded 95 "Parker Points" by the Wine Advocate. The big, punchy flavours bowled us all over at the initial sampling stage... a genuine benchmark Shiraz.
The range includes:
Kay Brothers MerlotKay Brothers Cabernet SauvignonKay Brothers Amery ShirazKay Brothers Hillside ShirazKay Brothers Block 6 ShirazThese are all big, rich, powerful wines with some weighing in at 15.5%alc. A massive wine by any standards.

Storing your wines can be fraught with danger. Keeping your precious bottles at the correct temperature is vital to ensure they mature correctly and drink at their very best. If bottles are stored too cold or too warm the wine can precipitate and separate leaving a cloudy liquid and lots of sediment. Not nice.
With fluctuating temperatures between months of the year and even times of the day keeping track is vital. Our new range of
digital cellar thermometers (and hygrometers) have been introduced due to massive demand for monitoring wines in storage.
Digital monitoring allows the maximum and minimum temperatures to be monitored to establish variations being experienced. Some models even feature data logging capabilities which can be downloaded to a computer for expert analysis.
Most of our cellar thermometers also feature an hygrometer (to monitor the relative humidity of the atmosphere) and a clock. For the uber-lazy some units are even linked to an atomic clock to ensure the correct time .. anywhere in Europe. Perfect for mobile wine cellars!
Wireless thermometers even allow you to keep a close eye on your wine collection from the comfort of your front room. No need to miss your favourite TV show or risk venturing into the darkness of your cellar.

Extracts from an article by by Charles Metcalfe and Joel B. Payne
According to a report issued by the private consulting company, Wine Intelligence, one third of all women and a quarter of all men believe that lower alcohol wines are becoming more fashionable. Although 59% of all wine drinkers in Great Britain claim to read the alcohol content of a bottle of wine before purchasing, only about half of those said that it was important when deciding what to buy.
More important factors for choosing a given wine were grape varietal, promotional offer, that is price, brand, country of origin, recommendation by friend or family and region of production. Interesting, though, consumers link higher alcohol levels with better quality and better value for money.
Other findings from the report included:
- White wine is still more popular than red wine
- The growth in rosé sales is driven by regular rosé drinker consuming more, rather than growth in the number consumers.
- Although Chardonnay is still the favoured white wine varietal, Pinot Grigio is challenging Sauvignon Blanc for second place.
- Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon lead the red varietals, ahead of Shiraz and Pinot Noir.
- Although the lead is narrowing, consumers choose Australia over French as their favoured country of origin.

Barrels & Bottles were proud sponsors of this years Chatsworth Horse Trials - supplying wine and champagne for the event and entertaining the crowds with the spectacular "sabrage" demonstration. This is the art of removing the cork from a bottle of champagne with a
sword .. great fun if a little wasteful on the champagne!
