Wine Notes
Grapes from the Triangle vineyard on Maraekakaho Road were selected for this Stone Paddock Syrah due to their vast flavour and aroma profile. Dried herbs, white pepper and savoury notes are the initial characters present on the nose, but with the introduction of air the wine opens up to reveal characters of raspberry, red cherry and five spice. The palate is beautifully balanced with ripe fruit flavours of plum, wild berries and mineral notes. This Syrah is finely structured combining both savoury characters and fruit sweetness.

Food match
This elegantly structured Syrah has a complex flavour profile allowing it to suit a wide range of foods. From spit roasted meats to eggplant vegetarian meals or tuna sashimi, this wine is very versatile.

Viticulture
Two clones of Syrah are grown in the Triangle vineyard on Maraekakaho Road. The soil profile of the vineyard features stony river gravels with a silt loam cover varying in depth from 50cm to being completely absent. The silty areas produce slightly higher degrees of pepper notes whilst the absence of silt loam provides the riper floral spectrum. Fruit thinning is essential and the canopy is fastidiously managed to allow good sunlight and aeration. Harvest took place on the 5th of April.

Cellaring Potential
Drink from late 2009 or cellar for several years to add complexity.

Winemaking
Whole bunch fruit was destemmed and partially crushed to tank. A period of cold soaking was conducted to maximise colour and tannin extraction before the ferment was started. Temperatures reached 30°C during fermentation and this was managed by two to four daily pump-overs. Regular tasting decided the pressing date, after which the wine was transferred to barrel for malolactic conversion. Barrel maturation lasted for 10 months in new and seasoned French oak barriques. The 2008 Syrah received a light fining and filtration before bottling on the 11th March 2009.
