Simonsig

Simonsig - South Africa

Simonsig - South Africa

Jacques Malan, a Huguenot from Merindol in the south of France, arrived in the Cape in 1688. He began farming in the Franschhoek Valley, later moving to Stellenbosch - an area that was to become one of the finest wine producing regions of the Cape.

Nine generations later Frans Malan continued the family tradition when he purchased the farm De Hoop and produced the first wines - hand filled, and labelled by his wife Liza - under the Simonsig label.

Simonsig is situated just north of Stellenbosch in the foothills of the Simonberg Mountains. The farm has 205ha under vine, planted in mainly shale soils that have good water retaining capacity. Sandstone and granite soils are also present. Careful experimentation with the different terroirs on the farm has enabled the winemaking team to arrive at the optimum conditions for growing the different varietals.

Simonsig Sauvignon Semillon

Ref: sa8000

Price: £9.48  inc VAT

Quantity:

A new blend of Sauvignon & Semillon was started in 2001 following in the style of the famous white Bordeaux Wines It is the sister wine of the well known Malan Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot blend.

The cool conditions were ideal for Sauvignon blanc to express its varietal identity. The highest Sauvignon blanc vineyard was harvested before the end of January and the others followed early in February before the mid February heat. A good mix of green pepper and riper gooseberry flavours will combine well for richness and complexity. The Semillon showed good quality.

Bright pale straw colour. Fresh flowery nose with hints of green peppers and winter melon. Smooth silky mouthfeel with ripe apple and pear flavours lingering on the aftertaste. Refreshingly dry with soft fruit acid makes this a very easy drinking style of wine.

Simonsig Cabernet Merlot

Simonsig Cabernet Merlot

Ref: sa8001

Price: £9.48  inc VAT

Quantity:

In the seventies this wine started as Simonsig Red Table Wine and in 1978 Frans Malan christened it Adelberg. For many years Pinotage made up the biggest part of the blend with the balance made up of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. In 1998 the Adelberg packaging was redesigned and the blend changed to Cabernet-Merlot to suit the preference of international consumers. The Malan Family Vintners is made by using the best grapes available in the beautiful Stellenbosch region. Stellenbosch is widely recognised as the top wine region in South Africa.

The warm weather in February and March ensured that the red varieties reached full ripeness under ideal conditions. Some of the older Cabernet Sauvignon grapes ripened very slowly and required a lot of patience. Many growers waited until after the Easter weekend before harvesting and the best Cabernet grapes were not picked until well into April. The top vineyards gave us wines with structure, concentration and complexity.

Deep plum colour with purple rim. Ripe black cherry flavours supported by a cedary vanilla oak spiciness. Medium body with the unmistakable lead pencil Cabernet influence. A sweet red berry Merlot contribution lingers on the finish which shows a food friendly dryness. Further maturation in the bottle will expose more of the sweet fruit characters.

Simonsig Sauvignon Blanc (unwooded)

Ref: sa8011

Price: £11.90  inc VAT

Quantity:

Simonsig first bottled a Sauvignon Blanc in 1978, but it was only in the last 10 years that the variety started to reach its potential. Meticulous attention to site and clonal selection as well as flavour manipulation in the vineyard through scientific canopy management consistently results in quality grapes packed with flavour. Sauvignon Blanc is essentially a variety where the quality originates in the terroir of the vineyard.

Youthful, green tinged straw colour. Powerful Sauvignon aromas dominate the bouquet. Concentrated tropical and green fig flavours with delicious green pepper providing focus. Zesty and crisp on the palate with fresh acidity that lingers on the aftertaste. The delicate balance is a true reflection of the cool summer. A touch of Semillon contributes to the smooth silky mouth feel that makes it perfect with food.

Simonsig Chardonnay

Simonsig Chardonnay

Ref: sa8012

Price: £12.38  inc VAT

Quantity:

The 1978 Simonsig Chardonnay was the first wine of this variety to be bottled in South Africa. Over the years new plantings of the best available virus free clones were planted on the bet vineyard sites available on the Estate. These mature vineyards provide excellent quality grapes for our flagship white wine. Full ripe grapes are harvested to get optimal flavour development. The juice is 100% barrel fermented in French Oak barrels with about 40% oak. Malolactic in inoculated on a quarter of the wine and battonage (lees stirring) is done on all the barrels to enhance the buttery characters. The aim is to allow the primary Chardonnay varietal flavours to dominate rather than the buttery character. Wood maturation lasts for 9 months before bottling.

The cool climatic conditions favoured the development of fruit flavours especially for the white wines. The natural acidities were also higher than normal adding to the zesty freshness and liveliness of the white wines.

Merindol Vineyard Syrah

Ref: sa8023

Price: £20.94  inc VAT

Quantity:

Over the past decade Simonsig has replanted Shiraz vineyards with the best new virus treated Shiraz clones available. This has led to a dramatic improvement in the quality of the grapes. The vineyards were planted on specially selected sites where Shiraz would achieve optimum quality. The grapes came from a vineyard planted with the highly rated SH 99 clone of Syrah. The soil is deep, red, decomposed granite which has an excellent water retention capacity facilitating deep root systems to extract minerals and nutrients. The Merindol name is taken from the Malan Coat of Arms.

The hot dry summer resulted in very ripe grapes with tremendous colour and huge structure. The high sugar levels made rich red wines with lots of body and loads of ripe fruit flavours. Big wines that should last for many years.
