Quinta da Franqueira Blanco, Barcelos

Quinta da Franqueira Blanco, Barcelos

Ref: 72013

Price: £7.52

Quantity:

An estate-bottled wine from a small family-owned Quinta, that is fully committed to producing classic vinho verde.

Piers Gallie has six Ha of Loureiro (65%), Trajadura (30%) and Azal. The grape varieties are harvested and pressed separately. The juice is fermented cool with selected locally developed yeasts. The resulting wine is allowed to settle and cooled to preserve its freshness and slight sparkle until bottled. Only the best cuvées are selected for Quinta da Franqueira. Loureiro makes up the greater part of the blend but that may vary depending on the harvest conditions.

Unfortunately due to a very disappointing '99 harvest Piers has decided that the quality was not bottling standard. Consequently we will have to wait until April 2001 for the 2000 Quinta da Franqueira.

You can also enjoy staying at Quinta da Franqueira with a choice of six imaginatively decorated bedrooms, by Pier's wife Kate, in the north wing of the monastery or the Gate House apartments

Quinta dos Roques Encruzado Blanco, Dao

Quinta dos Roques Encruzado Blanco, Dao

Ref: 72007

Price: £12.63

Quantity:

The last few vintages from this estate have seen Roques transformed from locally respected producer to possibly the most dynamic and exciting winery in Portugal. Bouquets have been thrown from near (Revista dos Vinhos Portuguese Producer of the Year 1998/9) and far ("A legend in the making"; Wines and Spirits Magazine (USA) June 1999), and the 1997 releases show the team going from strength to strength.

And what a team! Manuel Lopes de Oliveira and his son-in-law Luis Lourenço oversee the modern winery and immaculate vineyards, whilst winemaking is the responsibility of the talented Jorge Brites and the legendary Professor Virgilio Loureiro. The vineyards now extend to 40 hectares, spread across twelve different plots and a mind-boggling variety of mesoclimates and soils. Vineyards are increasingly batch-planted, with most new plantings being of Touriga Naçional, Tinto Cão and Encruzado.

Coming from an altogether riper set of grapes than the 1999.This is immediately appealing with generous apricot fruit and nectarine overtones it is long and balanced on the palate, with only a small nuance of new oak. Drink through to Christmas but then put away remaining bottles for a least a year.

The list of shareholders now looks like a who's who of the Portuguese wine industry, and includes Jim Reader (from Cockburn's Port) and Raymond Reynolds.

Around ten hectares of vines are now planted in three premium plots, with the emphasis very much upon Touriga Naçional.

Duas Quintas

Duas Quintas

Ref: 72009

Price: £8.78

Quantity:

The Douro River Valley of Portugal has the distinction of being the world's first "denomination d'origine controlee," famous for its wines since the age of the Roman Empire. In more recent centuries, the valley has become best-known for Porto, the sweet, high alcohol wines that the British love so well. Ramos-Pinto, a native Portuguese shipper respected the world over for its excellent port wines, recently decided to reclaim the Douro's older heritage and introduce a table wine from this great wine-growing region.

Duas Quintas is a blend of grapes from two very special Ramos-Pinto vineyards. Quinta da Ervamoira lies in a rocky, low altitude area on the banks of the river Côa. Here the grapes grow to full maturity in the hot, dry weather, contributing density and body to the blend. About 20 miles away lie the granite-filled vineyards of the Quinta dos Bons Ares. Situated at a higher altitude, the grapes here derive fresh aromas and lively flavors from the cooler growing conditions, adding a lively vivacity to the finished wine.

Duas Quintas offers the best qualities of these diverse growing regions in a red wine with fresh fruit flavors, rich complexity and excellent balance.

The colour of this wine is an intense brilliant ruby red. It has floral and fruity aromas that are fine and elegant with fresh fruit such as grape and cherry with a hint of vanilla. The wine has a fresh and aromatic attack. It has good acidity against soft lively tannins. Full-bodied and smooth, it has very fruity taste of cherry and blackberry with a slight vanilla note at the end. The finish is fresh, well balanced and persistent.
