Pirie Vineyards and Climate
Tasmania is Australia's most southerly state, separated from the mainland by the narrow waters of the Bass Strait, and the cool maritime climate is often compared to the classical cool regions of northern France. As a result Tasmania is able to produce elegant wines with excellent natural acidity, which are perfect to accompany modern food styles. The Pirie Estate wines are sourced from selected vineyard blocks in the broader Tamar and Esk Valleys, and viticultural practices are closely managed to ensure that the high quality fruit requirements for the Pirie label are met. In particular, yields are strictly controlled and are usually maintaining below 10 tonnes per hectare.
Piries Reputation - Second to None!
Over the last two decades, Dr Andrew Pirie has been the most influential figure in the Tasmanian wine industry, initiating and building Tasmania's largest and most important vineyards and wineries. He has received national acclaim for his contributions to the Australian wine industry and in 2001 was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia for services to the Tasmanian wine and tourism industries. With the first vintage of Estate Pinot Noir awarded 95/100 by both James Halliday and Huon Hooke, this illustrates Andrew's intention to take Tasmanian wine to the next level. Pirie is a 5 star rated winery by James Halliday, 2008, 2009 and 2010.
