History of Pio Cesare
Ref: Pio-Cesare
This historic estate was established in 1881 by its namesake, Pio Cesare. It is based in Alba in the heart of the Piedmont region, nestled between the Alps and the Mediterranean Sea. In the 1950s, Pio Cesare was one of the first to export top quality Barolo, and develop the wine's reputation, in the UK market. Today, the founder's great grandson Pio Boffa continues the family tradition producing Piedmont wines in a style that balances the best of the old with the best of the new.
Great wine producers are undeniably those with great vineyards. Pio Cesare own 52 hectares amongst the hills of Barolo and Barbaresco. These include 16 ha of the noted 'Ornato' vineyard in Barolo and 18 ha of 'Il Bricco' in Barbaresco. Notable also, is the Barolo vineyard of 'Colombaro' in which Pio Boffa has, unusually, planted Barbera grapes rather than Nebbiolo. The wine is called 'Fides' and it is a truly unique, world-class wine.
In the winery, 'minimal intervention' is the approach. Pio Boffa has been responsible for evolving the family style, carefully modernising the wines without losing the classic family traits or the Piedmont character. Shorter maceration, separate lot fermentation, judicious selection from barrel and large cask ageing all respect the individuality of the region's wines. These are wines that are determined by the vineyard rather than fashion.
Recently, Pio Boffa has added a limited range of 'Single Vineyard' Barolo, Barbaresco, Barbera and Chardonnay wines. These are only produced in the best vintages, offering a more modern interpretation of some of the great individual sites in Piedmont. Together with the classic range of Pio Cesare wines, these are ranked amongst the world's best wines. From top-class Barolo and Barbaresco to crisp Gavi and Chardonnay, the wines of Pio Cesare offer exceptional quality and value.
