Pertaringas Two Gentlemens Grenache is a traditional family indulgence but more so, it is a testament to the Hardy and Leask background of producing wines that are to be drunk with food and family. The vineyards that make up Two Gentlemens are planted on the Fleurieu Peninsula between the Southern Ocean and Saint Vincents Gulf. The maritime climate is ideal for Grenache grown on own roots in some of the oldest soils on the planet. The 2007 vintage was extremely dry due to the drought that was gripping Australia at this time and harvest occurred earlier than normal. Towards the end of the vintage there was a touch of rain that helped to settle the dust and prevent the vines from completely dehydrating. Yields of our Grenache were down about 40%, but this variety excels in warm conditions. The reduction in weight and bunch numbers for this vintage still produced excellent depth and flavour concentration and the resultant wine is irresistible.
Pertaringa Grencahe shows bright ruby in colour, it reveals luscious red fruits including cherries, strawberries and raspberries with delicate nuances of earthiness on the nose. The palate continues with these bright red fruit aromas, but underscored is a fine sensation of white peppery spice. This elegant and medium-bodied style with almost Pinot Noir like characters is immediately enjoyable as the tannin structure is soft. For all we know, this is one of the icon varieties grown in the McLaren Vale district and deservingly should receive a much bigger following - good for the ones who know!
