Northstar Winery - Washington State, USA

Northstar Winery - Washington State, USA

Northstar was born of a desire to produce the ultimate showcase for Washington's star grape variety - Merlot. The project and winery were conceived in the early 1990's as part of a total quality initiative at parent company Stimson Lane Vineyards and Estates. It was determined that in order to make the best possible Merlot that could ultimately be considered among the world's best, a totally dedicated winemaking team, and ultimately a dedicated winery would be required. To bring a more global perspective to Northstar, famed California winemaker Jed Steele was asked to consult on the project. He eagerly accepted and remains keenly involved in Northstar to this day.

Warm summer months and a cool autumn yielded a record harvest for 2005. The growing season began with moderate winter temperatures followed by a long and warm summer which allowed prolonged hang-time and resulted in fruit with deep, concentrated flavours and intense colour.

This rich wine is concentrated and yet elegant, with aromas of cherry, plum, raspberry, and blackberry, finishing off with flavours of toasted oak, vanilla, coconut, mint, and toffee. Enjoy and celebrate!

Northstar Vineyards and Climate

Northstar Winery is located in the Walla Walla region of eastern Washington. Vineyard diversity is one of the keys to Northstar's success in producing the flagship Columbia Valley Merlot. For any given vintage, almost 20 unique vineyard blocks from around the Columbia Valley are sourced, the majority of these vineyards are over 15 years old and yield no more than three tonnes per acre. The top dozen or so parcels make it through the rigorous selection process into the final blend, with each block bringing a unique dimension to the wine, either distinct aromas and flavours or structure and tannins. In most years, small amounts of WA Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot are added to the blend - the result is a rich, complex wine with bright fruit appeal and the ability to age gracefully for years.

At a blind tasting comparison of Northstar Merlot with Cru Classé wines from St. Emilion and Pomerol held in Seattle in October 2007, Northstar was ranked top. Being less than half the price of all other wines in the line up this is a truly special wine on an international level.
