"Would that all Rioja were as good as this. Marques de Vargas is a single estate of 60ha based in Rioja Alta that has existed for four generations, but which has only begun to make a splash in recent years.

A number of factors are behind the rise in fortune, not least the building of a spanking new winery and the helping hand of the well-known consultant oenologist Michel Rolland. These would count for nothing, however, were it not for the attention to detail that takes place in the vineyards, where no expense is spared to grow top quality fruit.

It shows through in this Reserva, which is a muscular wine packed with strawberry and plum fruit, but also with the meaty, gamey wildness that is missing from so many modern Riojas. It’s thoroughly compelling now, but it had years of life ahead of it. Yum yum."

Deep intense black cherry with violet rims, very complex spicy nose with strong backbone and hints of leather, toast and cigar accents, concentrated and ripe crushed berry fruit with blackberry flavours and gamey, earthy notes, powerful tannins, rich and great structure, well balanced, with long finish of much finesse.
