Knappstein Lenswood Vineyards

Tim Knappstein's winemaking approach at Knappstein Lenswood Vineyards is a blend of modern technology and traditional methods.

Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are released annually. Semillon and a Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Malbec blend are only bottled in warmer years as the cool Lenswood climate makes ripening unreliable in cool years.

All oak used is supplied by French coopers. It is only kept for two years to ensure both the oak and fruit flavours in the wines are fresh. A modest production target of 200 tonnes from the vineyard gives a potential of 14,000 dozen. Typically only 70% of the wines made in any season will meet the standards for inclusion in the final blends, so once in full production, only 10,000 dozen will be selected for the Knappstein Lenswood Vineyards label. The balance is sold in bulk.

Wines are aged for varying periods after bottling, until ready for release, which vary from six weeks for Sauvignon Blanc, a year for Pinot Noir and up to two and a half years for the Cabernet/Merlot/Malbec Palatine blend.

As usual the fruit from all Sauvignon Blanc blocks was made into separate wines, and all were cold fermented in stainless steel tanks after the juices had been settled to high clarity.

For the final blend a careful selection was made from these wines, and a touch of Semillon was added to give palate weight and complexity.

This Sauvignon Blanc shows great intensity and length, with abundant gooseberry characters and riper hints of passionfruit and white melon, both on the nose and in the lingering flavours.

All vines were extensively leaf plucked to give good bunch exposure and so develop ripe fruit flavours. To achieve a more fruit driven style more juice was tank fermented, including that from the 1986 plantings which we considered the best and which had previously fermented in barrel.

The balance was fermented in some new and mainly one year old French oak barriques, and was left on its yeast lees and stirred fortnightly to gain richness and complexity from this lees contact. Part was also allowed to undergo malolactic fermentation.

The result shows typical cool climate Semillon characters, with citrus, white melon, smoke and cut grass on the nose plus gentle oak. The palate repeats these characters, and is complex and elegant with lingering flavours and a dry finish.

Knappstein Lenswood Pinot Noir

As usual the Pinot vines were shoot thinned in the spring, and the canopies were trimmed and leaf plucked in Summer to give excellent exposure of the bunches to sunlight which helps to maximise ripe fruit flavours, colour and tannin.

It is a rich and concentrated wine with crimson colour and ripe Pinot Noir fruit redolent of dark cherry, raspberry and plum with touches of earth and leather. The palate has layers of sweet, ripe, supple fruit balanced with ripe tannins, good acidity and toasty, smokey oak.

Yields were generally low, with all the Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon having small bunches of tiny thick-skinned berries. These survived the rain to make concentrated wines of excellent length and tannin.

It shows deep crimson colour, with rich plum and berry fruit on the nose and the palate has intense red and black berry flavours. The tannins are long and persistent, and give the wine a structure well suited to ageing. We believe it could be cellared for five to 12 years.

The wine is deep crimson, and shows rich blackberry, liquorice and plum aromas, while the palate is packed with opulent berry flavour, has great concentration and depth, finishing with firm ripe tannins.

Knappstein Lenswood Gewurztraminer

The majority of the fruit for this wine came from Jim and Cathy Flatt’s Maple Hill vineyard at Lenswood the balance being the first crop from the grafted vines on the Knappstein vineyard at Lenswood.

The fruit was crushed, chilled and pressed immediately, and the juice was then cold settled to clarify it. Then it was fermented in a stainless steel tanks, racked, bentonite fined and cold stabilised.

The wine is fragrant and fruity with aromas of rose-water, muscat and lychee against a spicy background. The palate has great richness and fruit sweetness, although dry in the sense of sugar, and has fine length and acidity.
