Langmeil Philosophy
We at Langmeil are committed to producing premium Barossa wine of the highest quality and believe that the secret to making a great wine starts in the vineyard, by producing grapes of the highest quality using well managed ecologically sustainable practices.
We own a number of predominately dry grown vineyards and draw on other fruit stock from the Barossa and Eden Valleys. Langmeil is known for its dedication to the preservation of the Barossa's heritage, environment and history and this is reflected in the restoration and maintenance of its properties.
We use sustainable viticulture practices to ensure the vineyard remains in balance with nature. This, in conjunction with the use of minimal sprays, is consistent with our approach towards sustainable best practice.
History of Langmeil Wines - Barossa, Australia
The land on which Langmeil Winery now stands was purchased by a 36 year old German blacksmith, Christian Auricht. He and his family arrived in South Australia in 1838 after emigrating from eastern-central Europe (Silesia) to escape religious persecution.
It was their fifth move in seven years - from Klastawe to Turowo in 1837; to Hamburg in 1838; to South Australia and Glen Osmond in 1839; to Klemzig in 1840. Finally, to Langmeil, their home for the rest of their lives. All their belongings were carried in a bullock dray.
Today Langmeil uses open fermenters and basket presses for over half its grape intake of approximately 1000 tonnes. In the main this accounts for all our premium red wines as well as a fair percentage of some of our other lines. The synergy of new and old world equipment has helped to capture the characteristics in each variety and protect the subtleties of individual vineyards.
Langmeils award winning premium range is internationally recognized and has contributed towards the winery being regarded as one of the top premium wine producers in Australia. Our young team is dedicated to the success of the winery, driven only by quality in every aspect. We are willing to listen, learn, communicate, educate and be open-minded. We trust you will enjoy Langmeil Winery's range of premium wines now, and continue to enjoy them for many years to come.
Langmeil Vineyards
Tanuda Property
1. The Freedom 1843 Shiraz Vineyard
The Freedom is Langmeil's first and foremost vineyard. Planted in 1843, the 3.5 acres of dry-grown Shiraz are situated on Langmeils Tanunda property. Sitting on the south bank of the North Para River, this site is predominately alluvial loam and red clay over limestone and ironstone, ensuring deep root penetration of up to 50 feet into the underlying water table. The vineyard produces a low yielding crop of 1.5 - 2 tonnes to the acre during optimum vintages.
2. The Orphan Bank Vineyard
A first for the Barossa Valley, the Orphan Bank vineyard is the result of transplanting over 300 vines from a 140 year old vineyard in Tanunda which was destined to be destroyed. It took 18 months to re-plant the vines on the south bank of the North Para River at Langmeil Winery. The operation was 95% successful and the first post-transplant fruit was picked in 2008. The site is predominately rich alluvial loam over limestone, ensuring ease of penetration for root development. The existence of this vineyard is a tribute to Langmeil's commitment to the Barossa and its culture.
3. The 1996 Shiraz & 2004 Ondenc Vineyards
Similarly situated on the south bank of the North Para River, and comprising 10.5 and 1.0 acres respectively, these vines provide quality fruit for our Valley Floor Shiraz and Sparkling Ondenc Cuvée.
Lyndoch Property
Situated in the southern reaches of the Barossa Valley, just out of the town of Lyndoch, this property showcases a diversity of soil profiles and aspects. The Fifth Wave Grenache vineyard was planted in 1953 on deep sandy soil. With slight elevation this dry grown 4.5 acre vineyard produces a rare, low yielding crop between 1 - 1.5 tonne to the acre. The 1 acre Jackamans Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard was planted in the 1960s on a site consisting of darker loam and produces a harvest of only 1-1.5 tonne. Other plantings on this property are Shiraz and Viognier.
Vine Vale Property
Langmeils most recently acquired property is situated in the heart of the Barossa in the sub-region of Vine Vale. This flat site has varying depths of sand / sandy loam overlying red clay and shale and boasts a three acre vineyard of Shiraz planted in the 1880s. In addition, it comprises plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Pinot Noir and Viognier.
