Gillman 2004
Ref: nz500

Quantity:
A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot & Malbec.
2004 was a winemaker's dream vintage - week after week of dry, warm days followed by cool nights. The near-drought conditions resulted in a very low yield per vine and we picked fruit with the highest sugar levels I have seen in 16 vintages working in Matakana. The resulting wine, full of rich, ripe fruit flavours, is already showing well and will only continue to improve with further bottle aging.
2004 Production:
* 1,272 bottles
* 342 half-bottles
* 14 magnums
Vineyard:
* Currently 1.5 acres of closely planted vines (6,000+ per hectare).
* Soil is free-draining iron-rich volcanic clay.
* Current varieties planted - 63% Cabernet Franc, 34% Merlot, 3% Malbec.
Vinification:
* Grapes are hand picked and sorted before crushing.
* 100% de-stemming is practised.
* The wine is hand-plunged during fermentation every four hours, and is left on the skins for a total of 21 days.
* Malolactic fermentation occurs in the barrel.
* We fine with fresh egg whites. The wine is unfiltered.
* Aged for two years in new Seguin Moreau oak barrels.
Gillman Vineyard 2004 wine is a stunning example of boutique New Zealand wines at their finest.
