Franschhoek Forge Mill

Forge Mill Winery - South Africa

Forge Mill Winery - South Africa

Ref: Forge Mill

The Franschhoek Valley ward is a relatively small area which was settled in the late 1600’s by 200 Protestant Huguenot immigrants fleeing from Catholic persecution in France - hence its French background and winemaking tradition.

Under new ownership and management, Franschhoek Vineyards has shed the old co-op image and is well into top gear in a drive to make quality wines at affordable prices. New wine making equipment installed for the 2001 vintage has been put to good use by the winemaker, Deon Truter. The aim is clean, well made wines with true varietal character; good weight of fruit with easy drinking finishes.

The new manager, Dan Coetzee who we have known for many years, has produced a comprehensive range for export (under the Forge Mill label) from a selection of the best grapes and in his usual efficient way ensured a professional and reliable service.

Forge Mill Sauvignon Blanc

Forge Mill Sauvignon Blanc

Ref: sa2201

Price: £5.58

Currently not available

This wine offers alluring flavours and aromas of fresh cut grass and tropical fruit, with apricot and fig. On the palate, it is fresh and zesty, with a lingering herbaceous taste. This Forge Mill Sauvignon Blanc is the perfect refresher and light food wine, with tropical fruits and grassiness giving way to a crisp, dry taste.

Selected vineyards are hand-picked in the early mornings when the grapes are cool, and brought in before 11h00. At harvesting, sugar levels were between 19° and 22° Balling.

The whole process is done reductively i.e. reducing exposure to oxygen. After destalking and chilling, flavour extraction is achieved by 8-10 hours skin contact. After separation from the skins, the juice is settled overnight. Clear juice is racked from the lees to a fermentation tank and inoculated with active dry yeast. Fermentation is at about 10-13 °C to maintain the flavours. The wine is allowed to ferment dry, and then racked from the lees, stabilised and filtered to be ready for bottling.

Grapes originated from Franschhoek Region. Average age of vines: 10-15 years Type of soil: Alluvial
