Tyflo - promoting sustainable viticulture. Tyflo is the nickname for Typhlodromus pyri - a tiny bug which is a natural predator of mites. This will to fight parasites and disease in a
natural way earns Michel Fonne the right to use the coveted Tyflo label on their bottles. The harvest from each of the Domains plots are separately converted into wine in
order to allow the unique characteristics of the various kinds of soil to shine through. The Barth Rene vineyards are planted to a density of approx. 4500 to 5000 vines per hectare.
The manual harvesting allows the winemakers to pay extraordinary attention to grape quality. The white grapes are pressed using a pneumatic system that avoids rot dissolution in the juice extracts. This systems also limits herbaceous and bitter tastes from creeping into the wines.
Following in the footsteps of many generations Michel Fonne studied winemaking in Dijon and Damery. It was in the latter that he learnt the méthode champenoise that has
allowed him to craft Barth Renes world renowned Cremant dAlsace. Michel took over management of the winery from his uncle Rene Barth in 1989. Michel is vice-president of the Alsatian wine makers association and on the council of the prestigious Confrerie St. Etienne.
