Soil :
Near the village of Montlaur, in an area where isolation really means what it says, Château de Roquenégade and its vast Estate face South and the hot sun that drenches the slopes of the Montagne d'Alaric. On these clays spread with stones rolled down from the mountain grow syrah, grenache noir and carignan.

Varietals :
Grenache noir : 35% Average : 53 years old
Syrah : 45% Avergage : 33 years old
Carignan : 20% Average : 53 years old

The harvest is totally manual. Each varietal is vinified separately, with carbonic maceration for carignan. Long macerations, between 15 and 25 days.
60% of the wine was aged in cask for 12 months.

Drinking advice :
The Estate put its vintages on the market late to provide the customer a wine nearly ready to drink. This wine is enjoyable now, although it shows a good aging potential (4 to 5 years).

Chateau Roquenade Corbières Reserve 2005

"Chateau Roquenade lies in the scrublands to the south of the Aude valley near to Carcasonne in the Languedoc region of south west France. The wine benefits from the hot summers near to the Mediterranean.

This Reserve Corbière is for the lovers of big tannic wines. It has bags of fruit and is aromatic and expressive. It went well with fillet steak which we had for our tasting. It also, incidentally, went well with dark chocolate later. We thought it benefited from being opened several hours before drinking. In fact it tasted well a couple days later.

I would not regard it as a general party wine but one for a more select dinner party who appreciates an interesting and quality wine from a region that, historically, has been a source of Europe's wine lake."
