The History of Champagne Jean Dumangin

The History of Champagne Jean Dumangin

Champagne Jean Dumangin is a family run business with over 100 years of experience in Chigny-les-Roses, Reims. A small company ensuring strict quality control of the entire process of making their Champagnes. Their dedication to quality includes hand picking of the grapes and the careful pressing and fermentation processes - all are essential for the production of top quality champagnes.

At each stage Champagne Jean Dumangin bring their extensive experience, knowledge and 5th generation family traditions to produce a consistently range of quality champagnes.

The champagnes are not released for sale until for a minimum of 3 years from harvest. This ensures the delicate flavours of their wines are fully matured. This is a full 12 months longer than the minimum required and longer than the most of the better known brands and supermarket brands. This maturity ensures a reduced natural acidity and finer balance.

Jean Dumangin grow all three grape varieties allowed in the creation of champagne (Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier). This ensures well balanced blendings for the cuvee with only the first pressing of grapes being used to provide greater depth and complexity oof flavour. Over 50% of each harvest is kept in reserve to ensure a consistent style and character from one year to the next.

The House of Jean Dumangin exploits 8.80 hectares of vineyards, 6 of which are listed as Premier Cru in the heart of the Montagne de Reims (Chigny-les-Roses area). As it comprises a third of each grape-variety (chardonnay, pinot noir and meunier), the production of a whole range of different qualities is possible. Since 1991, a 2.80 hectare plot grows on a hillside in the Couvrot vineyard area (near Vitry-le-François). As it is entirely planted with chardonnay, this chalky soil gives birth to the Brut Reserve Blanc de Blancs.
