Champagne Canard Duchene

Champagne Canard Duchene

Champagne Canard Duchene

Ref: Canard

Canard Duchêne has long been established as one of the major Champagne houses, based in the small village of Ludes just outside Reims. A bottle is opened every 10 seconds in France making it the most popular Champagne sipped. Canard Duchêne is a fruit driven style with a classic lean structure.

In Canard-Duchêne, all the wines have long matured in the Ludes cellars. The wines rest in the coolness of the cellars for an average of three years for the Brut. In the classic range, five to six years for the Grande Cuvée Charles VII and seven to eight years for the vintage wines.

The Chef de Caves creates a blend by marrying wines of different aromatic qualities. His objective is to create a Champagne which reflects the Style of the House, that he will try to perpetuate all the characteristics as the years go.

Symbol of enjoyment and elegance, Champagne is a gift from nature. From the 300 "crus" in the Champagne region, Canard-Duchêne has chosen 60 of them, blending Pinots and Chardonnay, in order to create year after year fruity, balanced and rounded wines.

Dug by hand during the 19th century in the chalk subsoil of the Champagne region, the cellars are open to the public (click on « The cellars » for more details). House a stunning allegory of the history of Champagne wines and the House, created by artist Michel Le Brun. In the Visitors’ Centre, you can also discover the six kilometres-long cellars and select various tailor-made formulas: lunch, dinner or buffet picnics in the garden, tasting...

The Blend

The three grape varieties are selected for the Brut blend in proportions which depending on the climate variations, may vary with the year:

Pinot Noir (35-40%) for its strength and character
Pinot Meunier (35- 40%) for its fruit and subtlety
Chardonnay (22-25%) for its finesse and elegance.

Reserve wines, stored separately by cru, account for 25% to 30% of the blend

Tasting Note

Appearance: straw yellow colour, fine mousse.

Nose: intense fresh fruit aromas, characteristic of Pinot grapes.

Palate: fruity characteristics, mingled with the fragrance of fresh brioche, both signs of maturity.

This Champagne is delightful to drink at any time of the day and is particularly good as an apéritif. It is a fine accompaniment for white meat

Recommendations

This Champagne is ready to drink. However, it will lose none of its qualities if put down for several years in a good cellar at a maximum temperature of 15° C. Champagne should be drunk at a temperature of 6° to 9° C. The bottle will be perfectly cool after twenty minutes in a champagne bucket filled with ice and water.

Tasting Note

Canard Duchene Charles VII

Canard Duchene Charles VII

Ref: 74710

Price: £32.00

The wine has a lemon-gold hue and a fine bead. The nose is lead by a delicious yeasty, autolytic aroma. Behind this there is a fresh, lemony fruit aroma, with a slightly herbaceous element.

A lovely mousse on the palate, which quickly fades to leave a delightful, creamily textured wine coating your mouth. There is good lemony acidity to balance this richness, and that yeasty flavour is also there. Slips down beautifully, with good length. All round an excellent wine.
