Bodegas Piqueras was founded in 1915 . Our first bottled wine was released in 1961. Under the protective cover of the recently created Denominación de Origin Almansa (regulatory body controlling wine production in the area - set up in 1975) , we were the first winery in the area to invest in oak barrels - buying a hundred, 300 litre oak casks.
A new era for our cellar began in 1987 when we started exporting our wines, and has led to enormous changes in the winery. In a relatively short time , we have established our brands in several world markets .
Today our wines can be found in 17 countries and exports represent 70 % of our bottled wine production.
In 1999 it was decided to build a new cellar on the outskirts of town which would meet the present and future needs of the winery .
Our new 7,000 sq. metre cellar was opened in 2002 .We are especially proud of the 1,500 sq. metre ageing room whose temperature and humidity are constantly controlled by computer, and which currently holds more than 3,000 barrels of American and French oak. The cellar also boasts the latest technology in wine making equipment and a magnificent tasting receptions room .
Its soil, basically chalky, and its climate, extreme continental, extreme continental, are ideal for the cultivation of highly concentrated wines. "Bodegas Piqueras" traditionally keeps in constant contact with its regular growers to control over 500 hectares of vineyard devoted to the production of "Monastrell" , "Tempranillo" and Grenache / Garnacha Tintorera" grape varieties.
Moreover, the cellar bought 190 hectares of farmland in 2000 , where it has already planted "Cabernet Sauvignon" , "Syrah" and "Merlot" for its red wines, "Verdejo" and "Sauvignon" for its white wines . This move enables us to have greater resources from which to make a wider variety of wines and more complex coupages .
