Bodegas Capcanes
Ref: capcanes
A village hidden away in the Priorato hills inland from Terragona isthe source ofmany fine wines today but has had a long wine growing history. Prior to Phylloxera at the turn of the century Bodegas Capcanes was very densely planted but after the devastation caused by the insect only about 1/5th of the original vineyards were replanted - predominantly with Garnacha which was the popular grape variety.
In 1933 five famlies from the village collaborated to estabnlish a co-operative that would handle large quantities of grapes economically and efficiently. The foundation of the co-operative led to a change in the commercial prospects of Bodegas Capcanes. Suddenly they could offer larger volumes at competitive prices. In 1980 they started to sell off their grapes prior to fermentation.
In 1998 the decision was taken to process all the villages grapes at the co-operative. As the quality of the grapes increased and an order of Kosher wines demanded new equipment launched the wines to a whole new level. The ground was laid for a range of fruit driven wines and the emerging success of the Bodegas Capcanes brand.
