As in neighbouring Argentina, wine has been produced in Chile since the 16th Century, however the country's greater international exposure has helped to place Chile far ahead in terms of export success. Today nearly 75% of Chile's wine is exported, with 17% coming to the UK, its second largest overseas market. Ongoing high levels of investment in winemaking and viticulture are driving wine quality ever upward, with its blend of old and new world styles appealing to many consumer tastes.

Across the wine producing regions, Chile's vineyard areas are completely free from the phylloxera pest, enabling vines to be grown on their original rootstocks. With diverse topography and fertile soils it is possible to practice near organic farming, and the quality of grape production is excellent. Anakena is based in the Cachapoal Valley and also has extensive vineyard holdings in Casablanca, Limari and San Antonio to the north. Bodegas de Aguirre is situated in the Villa Alegre area of the cool southerly Maule Valley.
