Bethany Wines - Barossa Valley

Bethany Wines - Barossa Valley

Johann Gottlob Schrapel and his family arrived in South Australia from Silesia on the ship "George Washington" in 1844, just eight years after the colony was settled. The family's historic vineyards are key to production of their quality wines at Bethany. Thirty hectares of vineyard in Bethany are owned by the Schrapels, comprising the Bethanien Block, the Old Manse Block and the Homestead Block.

The age of their vines ranges from 15 to 80 years. The old vines require traditional management of hand pruning and harvesting, while the newer plantings are managed with modern viticultural techniques such as close planting, high trellises and canopy control. Geoff and Robert look for maximum expression of fruit flavour in their wines and pay particular attention to the careful handling of grapes at vintage. The use of chemicals is minimised in grape growing and wine is made in small lots to maximise variations in fruit flavour and ripeness which contribute complexity to the wines; wines which are the most natural expression of their unique Barossa terroir.
Bethany Grenache

Bethany Grenache

Ref: a1700

Price: £13.18  inc VAT

Quantity:

Made from 100% Grenache grapes grown on some of the Barossa's oldest bush vines, hand-pruned and hand-picked, it is unusually deep in colour for a pure Grenache. The nose is warm and spicy with red berry fruit aromas and these are continued on in the rich, well textured palate and the long soft tannin finish. All in all a typical harmonious Barossa style, which will go well with roasted pork with dumplings or lambs fry and bacon. We recommend decanting for two or three hours before serving.

The Grenache fruit is sourced from very low yielding 120 year old bush vines which are hand pruned to 50 - 60 buds per vine. These old vines are grown on their own roots rather than grafted rootstock, naturally limiting the canopy growth and allowing for better fruit exposure to sunlight. This exposure ensures even ripening of the grapes with enhanced fruit flavour esters and colour ripeness. The fruit is hand picked very late in the season at optimal ripeness.

Bethany Shiraz

Bethany Shiraz

Ref: a1701

Price: £19.31  inc VAT

Quantity:

Made from hand-pruned premium quality shiraz grapes grown on the foothills of the Barossa. The climatic conditions leading up to vintage were some of the best experienced over the past five years, providing the finished wine with excellent varietal fruit and acid balance. The aroma is quite outstanding, followed by the rich, ripe blackberry and plum flavours so typical of Barossa shiraz and in particular of the Schrapel family's flagship red. In the mouth it is full-bodied and luscious with great depth of shiraz flavour, whilst the lingering finish displays seamless rich fruit, soft tannins and well integrated natural acidity. It will go well with all red meat dishes and full flavoured cheeses and it is especially enjoyable with oxtail braised in red wine.

The Bethany Shiraz fruit was sourced from our vineyards and neighbouring vineyards in the Barossa. Traditional viticulture practices were applied in both vineyards with the yield from old vines 6.25t/Ha. The vineyard was hand pruned to 70 buds per vine to limit yields.
