Barbeito Madeira

Vinhos Barbeito Madeira

Vinhos Barbeito Madeira

First populated in 1420 by the Portuguese, the island of Madeira is the largest of what was once known as the Enchanted Isles. The vines the settlers planted thrived, and Madeira wine became increasingly famous, especially the concession given to it for colonial export in Britain’s 1660 Navigation Act. By the mid 1700s, it was the world’s most famous wine, used for such occasions as toasting the American Declaration of Independence in 1776.

Ricardo de Freitas is the third generation to run this small company, since grandfather Mario Barbeito set himself up in business in 1946. Over the last ten years Ricardo has transformed the operation into what must be the most dynamic of all Madeira shippers. Estufa wines are made here (and are actually pretty good, using a method whereby the wines don’t get ‘burned’ during the process), but we only deal in Ricardo’s canteiro wines, which are bottled only in small batches. Additionally, Barbeito no longer use caramel in any of their Madeiras, making a huge difference to quality. Over the last couple of years, Ricardo has been picking up gongs by the handful for his work, and we foresee many more to come.

We consider this to be the ideal introduction to canteiro Madeiras. If that sounds like it’s a compromise, be assured it is not! This is lovely ‘caramel and walnuts’ style of Boal, with good zippy acidity, and a remarkably long finish.

The second in our Single Cask series, 81a yielded just 888 half litre bottles. When it was first bottled, it displayed an extraordinary lemoniness, which has now been supplemented with nuts, marmalade and a tropical fruit note. A wonderful and worthy successor to 3a, but stocks are rare.

The follow up to the maiden 1995 sees Barbeito moving into a clear style for their Single Harvest bottlings. This is all about finesse, a lightness of touch even, but in a clearly medium dry balance of fruit and zestiness. There was a lot of speculation, such was the achievement of taking Tinta Negra Mole to new heights with the 1995, that it was just a one off. The 1996 dashes the myth, and if anything, is probably the marginally superior wine. A little more lifted, a little more complex, but just as ravishingly drinkable.

Barbeito Sercial 10 Year Old

Ref: 7813

Price: £22.81  inc VAT

50cl Bottle

Ricardo’s approach to Sercial is not to make it as raspingly dry as you might expect, which results in a deliciously rounded interpretation of this wine. A regular Gold Medal winner, and one which we would suggest serving between larder and room temperature, rather than fully chilling.
